Well...What is Boho?🤔

Well...What is Boho?🤔

Since Bohemian fashion has become "mainstream" there are plenty of subcategories of what Bohemian is/consists of. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a bohemian can be defined as "a socially unconventional person, especially one who is involved in the arts"(Oxford, 2021). While so many other subcategories exist, the main idea of unconventionalism and artsy remain. Other words, phrases or names often associated with bohemian are free-spirited, bizarre, gypsy, and wanderer.
Bohemians are "open-minded thinkers who believe in truth, freedom and love."

Bohemian fashion has become more popular due to music festivals like Coachella. People from all over the country and even those outside the U.S. flock to the popular festival every spring. Bohemian attire became a must at the event; concert goers are donned in fringe, flared jeans, florals, turquoise and other stones, tribal prints, paisley patterns, etc. Coachella attire was also inspired by Southern California or SoCal as the locals call it.
Bohemian culture for a very long time was viewed as a counterculture. Around the early 2000s many celebrities and designers began to create a "boho chic" look that has continued to stay true to its roots and became an iconic style look. Some celebrities known for their boho chic looks include Vanessa Hudgens, Nicole Richie, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen, Rachel Zoe, Sienna Miller, Erykah Badu and Jhené Aiko.
Now on to those subcategories. First, we have the Hippie Bohemian, originating in the 60s this style was characterized by tie dye prints, sandals, vintage leather jackets and headbands. Hippie and Bohemian seem to be interchangeable names for people who enjoy this style or even more so lifestyle as both are unconventional and self-expressive. However, do not assume that someone who considers themselves Boho wants to be called/labeled as a Hippie. Next, we have Afro-Bohemian. This style combines many classic bohemian aspects like stones, maxi skirts and kimonos with African prints like mud cloth and African accessories like waist beads and head wraps. Someone who embodies #afroboho like no other is the Queen Ms. Erykah Badu!

Third on the list is 70s Bohemian. Sounds pretty self-explanatory right? You know it! Flared denim, groovy prints, wooden chunky heels, etc. After that, is one of other personal faves (after Afro-Boho), Edgy Bohemian. This is where the grunge comes in! Think leather, studs, more form-fitting clothing, darker colors and vintage rock tees.

The last style I would like to share, to keep it a little shorter as there are at least 4 more styles, is Romantic Bohemian. Often seen in Bohemian weddings, Romantic Bohemian is defined by crochet patterns, blush tones, ivory tones, florals, lace and sheer fabrics. It is often seen as the whimsical variety of the group. At the end of this blog entry you can find a few photos that represent each of these various styles!
Here at VERRE, we have pieces for each category! Some of our pieces can satisfy a few different types of Bohemian styles when styled just right. And this was our aim. We know that everyone is different and while you cannot cater to everyone, we try to give options for our #bohobabes as they all may like different boho fashions.
We hope you have learned something more about #bohemianculture #bohemianstyle ! There is still much ground to cover! Please feel free to share with us what style is your favorite and/or which you would like to try. Also, feel free to do your own research on the culture. Even if full out boho isn't the look for you, you can always find ways to incorporate it into wardrobe and décor (which we will be discussing next ;)). Our emails are always open if you would like styling tips or have any questions regarding our products.
Also, share this with your friends and family, maybe they could learn something and find their style with us! And of course, stay tuned for our next blog. As we stated we will be getting into bohemian décor, as it has become a very, very (did we mention very) popular décor style in the past year. Look forward to some tips on how to add boho elements to your space. Until next time babes!
